Last week, Microsoft blocked the rollout of Windows 11's latest Patch Tuesday update for a number of Dell PCs after it was reported that the update clased with Intel's IPF driver, causing a number of issues including unexpected shutdowns, overheating, and slow performance. The company said it was working quickly to address these problems on the limited number of Dell PCs that were impacted, and has now released emergency out of band update KB5121767 that addresses the problem for Windows 11 version 24H2 and Windows 11 25H2. "This OOB update is a cumulative update, so you do not need to apply any previous updates before installing it. Devices affected by this issue and that were temporarily prevented from receiving the July 2026 security update can now install this OOB update, which includes all improvements from previous security and non-security updates, along with this additional fix. This OOB update is only recommended for devices affected by this issue. If your device is not affected, no action is required." Microsoft has not provided a list of devices that are impacted by the issues, but if your computer was able to install last week's Patch Tuesday update, it's unlikely you're impacted. The new emergency patch should be offered to PCs that had the previous update blocked by Microsoft. If your PC has been impacted by the issues, Microsoft says that "a limited number of Dell devices might display a yellow exclamation point in Device Manager next to the Intel Innovation Platform Framework Processor Participant driver (Intel IPF). In some cases, affected devices might experience changes in performance, power consumption, or system behavior." The good news is that most PCs impacted by this issue unlikely ever encountered problems, as Microsoft immediately blocked the update on impacted PCs before this month's Patch Tuesday even became available to them. The only situation where users may have encountered these problems is if they installed June's optional non-security preview update, or manually sideloaded the July Patch Tuesday update. Microsoft is getting better at catching issues before they reach general availability, and today's emergency out of band update is an example of how much faster the company is moving to address issues in the Windows OS so that users aren't impacted by downtime or bugs.
